What Does Custom Software Cost in India?

Custom software pricing in India ranges enormously, and most of that range is explained by scope rather than by quality. This page sets out how a serious quote is constructed, so you can judge whether the number in front of you is reasonable.

Software is priced by engineering time, not by feature count

A quote is fundamentally an estimate of how many engineer-days the work will take, multiplied by a rate. Everything that changes the price changes one of those two numbers.

This is why feature lists are a poor basis for comparison. User login is half a day with an email and a password, and considerably more with roles, permissions, single sign-on and audit logging. Two quotes listing the same feature can honestly differ several times over.

What moves the estimate

Number of distinct user roles — each is a separate set of screens and permissions
Integrations with existing systems, especially ones with poor or no documentation
Data migration from spreadsheets or legacy software, which is almost always underestimated
Offline capability, which changes the architecture rather than adding a feature
Regulatory requirements such as GST, DLT or healthcare data handling
Expected scale — a system for fifty users is engineered differently from one for fifty thousand
Whether you need a mobile app in addition to a web interface

Fixed price or time and materials

Fixed price works when scope can be defined properly upfront, which covers most operational software — clinic systems, billing, CRM, inventory. You know the cost before starting and the risk of overrun sits with us.

Time and materials suits genuinely exploratory work, typically new products where requirements will change as you learn from users. Fixed price on unclear scope is how projects end in disputes, because both sides end up arguing about what was implied. We default to fixed price and will tell you when your project is the other kind.

The cost after the invoice

Total cost of ownership matters more than build price. Hosting, maintenance, dependency and operating system updates, and eventual changes as your business shifts all continue after launch.

The biggest hidden cost is lock-in. If you do not own the source code, or it is built so that only one team can maintain it, every future change is priced by a supplier who knows you cannot go elsewhere. We hand over the code — which is also what makes a quote comparable in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

custom software development cost in India — the questions we get asked most.

Mostly engineering salaries and operating costs, not quality — the same frameworks, cloud platforms and practices are used everywhere. Within India there is also a wide range: a Lucknow team carries lower overheads than a Bengaluru or Gurugram agency, which is a large part of why our pricing sits where it does.

It depends on team size and time horizon. Subscriptions cost less upfront and scale with users forever; custom software costs more upfront and then only maintenance. For a small team a subscription is often genuinely better and we will say so. The balance tips toward custom as headcount grows, or when the tool cannot do what you need.

As accurate as the scoping behind them, which is why we spend time on the consultation and write exclusions explicitly. Where something is genuinely uncertain we say so and price that part separately, rather than burying a contingency in the total.

Milestone billing exists partly for this. Because you receive working software at each milestone, stopping early leaves you with something usable rather than a half-finished system you cannot deploy. We will also tell you at scoping if your budget and requirements do not meet, instead of starting and discovering it later.

Yes, usually by cutting scope rather than cutting corners. A first release aimed at learning what users will pay for costs far less than a complete product, and the foundations are still built so that success does not force a rewrite.
